Apple’s WWDC sells out in 2 hours
Apple today announced that its annual developers conference would run June 11-15 in San Francisco. And inside of two hours, Apple said the event had sold out.
Tickets for the five-day Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) were again priced at $1,599, the same as for the last two years' confabs.
The quick sell-out wasn't a shock: A year ago, Apple exhausted supplies in under 12 hours, a huge acceleration over 2010, when tickets were available for eight days. Read more...
San Francisco police help search for lost iPhone
San Francisco police officers helped Apple Inc. investigators look for a missing iPhone prototype that was left in a city restaurant in July, the police chief said, the second time in two years the company has lost an unreleased smartphone.
Police Chief Greg Suhr told the San Francisco Chronicle ( http://bit.ly/oOfTi1) that four plainclothes officers accompanied two Apple investigators who searched a San Francisco home for the iPhone prototype.
Apple employees who contacted the department asking for help finding a lost item conducted the house search after asking the resident's permission, and the officers did not enter the home, according to police.
Apple tracked the smartphone to the home using GPS technology, but the gadget wasn't found there, said Lt. Troy Dangerfield. Read more...
Cell phones stay on, but protesters disrupt SF subway
San Francisco's commuter railway left mobile phone services untouched during a closely watched protest Monday, but for many commuters that didn't matter because they were locked out of the railway system altogether.
During a chaotic, peaceful protest that started at the end of the workday, members of the hacking collective Anonymous joined up with Bay Area activists to protest last month's killing of Charles Hill, a passenger who was shot by a Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) policeman after throwing a knife at the officer.
A group of about 50 to 100 protesters started at BART's Civic Center Station, a few blocks from San Francisco City Hall, and then moved slowly down Market Street, forcing BART to shut station after station in San Francisco's downtown, in a cascading disruption of BART services between 5 and 7 p.m. Monday night. San Francisco Migrates to Hosted Exchange
The city and county of San Francisco have started a transition to using Microsoft's hosted e-mail service, choosing the software giant's service over Google and Lotus Notes.
Over the next year San Francisco will transition 23,000 users to the system and has had 300 pilot employees using the hosted service for the past five months.
San Francisco will pay Microsoft US$1.2 million a year or $6.50 per month per user, said Jon Walton, CIO for the City and County of San Francisco. "It's a significant cost savings to the city and was one of the key ways the department of technology was able to achieve the 20 percent budget reduction for this year which was a directive from the mayor," he said.
