Amazon looks to move security appliances to the cloud

Posted by vica

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking to expand its security offerings with hosted intrusion protection appliances and more extensive encryption features, as it looks to increase the level of protection users can get in its cloud.

For Amazon, proving its cloud computing platform can offer the same level of security as traditional hardware and software has been an ongoing challenge.

That it's difficult for companies to meet their existing security requirements in the cloud is a common misconception, according to Stephen Schmidt, chief information security officer at Amazon Web Services. Read more...

Digia buys Qt app framework from Nokia

Posted by vica

Digia has acquired the Qt framework from Nokia, giving it full control over the application framework, and now plans to expand support to more platforms, it said on Thursday.

Digia, based in Finland, started taking over Qt in March 2011 when it purchased Nokia's Qt commercial licensing and services business. The latest deal means Digia is responsible for all Qt activities including product development, as well as the commercial and open source licensing, the company said.

Qt is a cross-platform application and user interface framework designed to let developers write and deploy applications across desktop, mobile and embedded operating systems without rewriting source code.

One of Digia's first priorities will be to allow Qt-based applications to run on Android, iOS and Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 platform. The goal is to provide support for Android and iOS during the first half of 2013, a spokesman said via email. Read more...

Apple’s board needs to step up to new era

Posted by vica

The death of Apple Inc's strong-willed co-founder and Chairman Steve Jobs has put the secretive company's small board at crossroads.

Business as usual, or time for a change? The first signs of the future will be whether they choose an independent chairman and expand the number of directors.

Apple directors include heavy hitters, but they were seen offering advice to the chief executive rather than overseeing Jobs, who was known for persuading people to see things his way.

"The old message was "trust Steve," the new message has to be 'trust the team.' ... It's no longer the cult of personality." said Jim Post, a professor of corporate governance at Boston University School of Management who called for an independent chairman.

"The board needs to be expanded. They need to bring on additional independent talent ..., people who were not living in Steve's shadow," he said. Read more...

It's half the size of an iPad and will be less than half the price when it goes on sale Nov. 15. Amazon is offering the Kindle Fire for $199. The bare-bones iPad sells for $499, the most expensive for $829.

Of course, competing with the iPad won't be as easy as swiping a finger. Read more...

Data centers, under strain, expand at furious pace

Posted by vica

About a third to half of all data centers will be physically expanding or leasing new space in the next two years, according to recent surveys.
