BlackBerry's app store – BlackBerry App World – has notched up 3 billion downloads, parent company RIM boasted in a upbeat developers' blog post.
There are now over 90,000 apps in the store, the post says.
Apple's App Store has seen 30 billion downloads as of June and has about half-a-million apps on its books, but the 3 billion mark is still a bright spot for RIM at a time when its CEO has been forced to deny that the company is "in a death spiral".
Factoring in all non-App World applications, the number of downloads could be even higher: that 3 billion figure does not include web apps, apps from third-party BB stores or internal company apps.
The top three free apps in Blackberry App World today are Facebook, free chat and messaging app WhatsApp and Windows Live Messenger. Two photo apps – Photo Studio PRO and InstaPhoto – top the most popular paid apps on App World and the third most popular paid app is Room Escape – a puzzle game where the player is trapped in a mysterious room and needs to find their way out.
